Today I chose to respect what my body wanted and stayed in bed a while longer. Sometimes it isn't your willpower that's failing — it's your body that genuinely won't come along.
Last night I watched the World Cup final, Argentina against Spain — absolutely thrilling. Argentina were ruthless with their fouls, but that too showed a kind of wilfulness: never letting go until the very last second.
The biography-book project I've been working on actually landed an interview. In the age of self-media, the lesson is to plant as many seeds as you possibly can — you never know which one will flower.
Today, why not talk about what it felt like when I first came to Saudi Arabia. Working and living abroad was an experience I'd never had. Boarding the plane, I was nervous and expectant at once, quietly telling myself that everything would become familiar in the end. I arrived carrying a whole chest of ambition, ready to make my mark — and as for the twists and turns that followed, I'd rather not go into the details.
The most striking thing about this country is how deeply religious it is; most people hold a devout faith. The locals are, for the most part, warm and hospitable — though it's also a strictly hierarchical society of relationships, where face carries enormous weight. Life is comparatively easy-going; ordinary people put family first. South Asian and international workers make up a very large share of the population, and full-blooded Bedouins are a minority now.
What I love most is Riyadh at sunset — like the horizon I'm looking at right now: pink and gold, very beautiful. Outside the city centre there are few tall buildings, so you can see all the way to the far edge of the sky. And with that, even the fiercest heat becomes bearable — all the more so with night tennis and friends to keep me company.
The work I'm pursuing keeps moving steadily forward. I've also realised that a person's truly productive hours in a day amount to no more than four; the phone and the endless feeds devour the rest of our time and energy. Be kind to your daily ration of creativity.
I still look forward to being closer to my freedom — one step closer, and then another.
