Back in Shanghai回到上海Retour à Shanghai

Finally back in Shanghai, trying to return to a normal rhythm of life. My days have gained some happy trivialities — small things that artfully keep life in balance, while at the same time supplying a gravity of their own, like the light-headedness after a carb-heavy meal.

First, on the front of relative freedom, there has been progress, and I feel deeply the value of wu wei — of non-striving. Sometimes, perhaps, all that's needed is to do good, do much, keep a reasonably healthy body and stay alive — and then wait for opportunity to arrive.

With a crowd of good friends I drank my way, bar by bar, through Shanghai's famous nightlife district, and later that night we went on to a well-known gay bar — yet standing inside it I felt strangely bereft. A highly uniform aesthetic has taken hold even within a minority, enough to make you marvel at East Asian society's gift for homogenisation: gym-carved physiques and sleeveless black tank tops as if pressed from a single mooncake mould, announcing to the market that one has, it seems, caught up with the trend.

What surprised me, too, was the arm's-length quality of Shanghai's dating world: everyone samples and stops, dips in and slips out, trades playbooks — no attachment, no investment, nothing carried afterwards. Just a pleasant night shared, and youth worn away.

Later I saw friends who live, for a season or for years, in China and abroad — each living in their own way, each seeming to turn page after page, roaming the world of artificial intelligence, where a day in heaven is a year on earth, and no one knows any longer what months and years even are.

In the world I am shaping for myself, I hope to hear the wind and ride it — and take in the birdsong and the fragrance of flowers.
