A long dream一场长梦Un long rêve

Last night I had a truly enormous dream, and woke with a serenity I hadn't felt in a long while. The serenity came from the satisfaction of a night of nearly twelve hours' sleep — though the dream itself was nowhere near as easy.

In the dream I seemed to be back at my grandmother's house as it was before the demolition, running about with a crowd of people completing tasks — climbing onto the roof to catch a thief, that sort of thing — and answering a final set of questions based on what the NPCs did. People came and went, everything bustling, and the final result seemed somehow tied to the gaokao, China's college entrance exam. A helpless anxiety and fear rose in me, and I found myself pleading with the examiner.

I think this reflects, deep down, the brand that the gaokao — China's great nationwide machine — has left on me. I've dreamed more than once before of sitting the gaokao again, but without the luck of the first time: no bonus points this round, or a second year of slackened effort leaving so many problems gone rusty and unanswerable. A genuinely chilling nightmare of this mortal world.

To be tormented by something from twelve years ago is honestly shocking. But back in the reality of 2026, there is no longer any need to burn over exams or competition of any kind. The story on life's previous page — let it stay on the previous page.
