This week I have gone into the hospital once a day, and I have come to feel that doctors and hospitals hold a meaning nothing else can replace, because they strike straight at the essence of human existence.
Every time something hangs unresolved — waiting for a report, for a diagnosis, for the doctor's assessment — the unease is impossible to avoid; and yet all you can do is grit your teeth and go on, hoping for a good result.
Some things there is no point in overthinking. For instance: why is this happening to me? Indeed — it simply has.
All week I have been cancelling. Cancelling social life, cancelling plans, cancelling every long-range imagining.
Over these days I passed the news, one by one, to the friends around me and to my boss at work. And yet, after their words of concern, each of them cranes their neck a little toward the road you are on — and then carries on down their own. We withdrew from the citizens' night school we had enrolled in; we can no longer attend a close friend's wedding; we have gone silent in the little group chat of classmates in Shanghai — because saying it aloud changes nothing, and because I would rather this news did not occupy or invade other people's lives. My figure has vanished from the tennis court in our compound. I cancelled next week's trip to a friend's villa out in Qingpu. I cancelled the possible National Day trip to the Maldives with university friends. I cancelled Qixi.
Qixi, the nineteenth of August — nobody brought the plan up again, and there was no need to celebrate it. To be able to keep each other company and live well is already something to be deeply content with; every day we walk forward is itself a celebration of life.
I asked my boss for leave, and he allowed me to work remotely from home for as long as I am with her through the treatment. I am grateful for it — and so I also cancelled my flight back to Riyadh.
I cancelled the birthday I was going to spend in Riyadh with a whole crowd of good friends. I cancelled whatever amusements might have been waiting there. I cancelled the chance to go and watch the Six Kings Slam. I cancelled the life I had thought was a very good one.
When you have cancelled a great many things, you realise that life comes wrapped in a layer of matters that are fun to have and no loss to lack. They wind themselves around your life like the silk a spring silkworm spins in its prime, swaddling you layer upon layer. As the onion's outer skins peel away one by one, life itself turns out to be so simple.
Yes — how much money do you actually need to live happily? How great an achievement do you need before you will approve of yourself? While your body still grants you a moment to breathe, what is it that you really want to do?
If I turn my thoughts toward the pain, I can tell you, with the skin still stinging, that what life feels like right now is "utterly meaningless". If I look instead toward the brightness, what I hope for is a lightness running clean through the body — that I might wander this world free and unhindered, no longer bound by anything at all.
